I began work with a very large advertising agency and as it was the best job I’d ever had I was willing to do anything to keep it.

The numbers were always good, members contributed to the cost with an annual fee of about £50 if I remember correctly. Sometimes I would attend and find ten or fifteen members there, while other times we would make use of a larger location because thirty or more would be attending. And of course there were other smaller off-shoot groups and parties for those who wanted more regular enjoyment.

One of the most striking things about the experience was just how relaxed and open it was. While the first time was quite terrifying, and the second more fun, ultimately it became a highlight every month and I found myself looking forward to it immensely. The camaraderie between the members was excellent and this transferred to everyday life. More than once I found myself attempting to get a last minute table at one of the larger restaurants and I would find a fellow club member working there and instantly be given a table.

There were no class barriers, which I believe was unusual for any club in London in the 80’s. We had members in their early 20’s right up to mid 50’s, and from every profession too. We had a plumber, a company director (and his brother!), a well known journalist, a member of the Queen’s guard, several members of the Armed Forces, more than one Police officer, a doctor, a surgeon, a prison guard, the Hotel bellboy… It really was quite remarkable for the time.
